Abstract
This article examines the studio system in the American film industry. The studio system, lasting from 1920s to 1950s, was characterized by conglomeration of assembly line system, financial capital, and vertical integration. The assembly line system enabled the motion picture to mass-production. And the vertical integration means that unification of production, distribution, and exhibition. In the beginning of American film industry was free competition, but the Motion Picture Patent Company(MPPC) opened the monopoly era in 1909. MPPC was organized by Edison Company and the others(Biograph, Lubin, Selig, Vitagrapb, Kalem, Essanay, Melies, Pathe Fres, and Annat). MPPC controlled the American film markets through the licenses. But MPPC’s monopoly was not so long. Many distributors and exhibitors i11 America who complain about monopoly of MPPC became against the MPPC, so participated a production by themselves. And they co1Jtro1Jed American fi lm industry by 1912. They became known as the Independents. Between 1920s and 1950s, American film indus따 expended rapidly and the Independents integrated production, distribution, and exhibition through the merger and acquisition(M&A). Big 5(Paramount, Low’s(MGM), Fox(later 20th century-Fox), Warner Bros., and RKO) owned production, distribution, and theaters and Little 3(Universal Pictures, C뻐mbia Pictures, and United Artists) owned only production and distribution expended their power throughout the all countries, and induced assembly line system. These 8 companies were so called major studio and just this times called STUDIO SYSTEM ERA(or Studio Era). By controlling picture palaces in all of the downtown areas throughout America, the m헤or studjos took three-quarters of the average box-office receipts. But, the studio era bad declined by the late 1940s. The decline of the studio era was the result of two factors: the Paramount anti trust decrees and the emergence of a television. In 1948, as a consequence of the Paramount case, the federal government of the United States forced the Big Five to sell their theaters, just after suddenly Hollywood lost direct control and couldn’t access in the movie market. In certainly advent of television transformed Hollywood. Ever since the 1950s, when American stuffed their homes with television sets, Hollywood has been predicted to lose its powers.
