Abstract

This study focuses on the landscape paintings of Ohheon Kim Taeseon (悟軒 金台善), a painter active in the Gangwon region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in order to examine their types, stylistic features, artistic context, and art historical significance. Approximately twelve works attributed to Kim are extant, most of which take the form of folding screens. His major subjects are divided into conceptual landscapes—including Xiaoxiang Eight Views, Nine Bends of the Wu’i River, and Poetic Landscapes—and real landscapes—such as Geumgangsan (Diamond Mountains) and Eight Views of Gwandong. These works demonstrate Kim’s adherence to traditional landscape painting themes and methods that persisted from the late Joseon dynasty into the modern era. Employing the Southern School techniques of hemp-fiber strokes, dotting, and light washes, Kim created refined and restrained compositions that combined literati ideals with local sensibilities. The fact that most of Kim’s surviving works are preserved in Gangwon institutions and collections, coupled with the presence of colophons such as “Scholar of Yangju,” “Scholar of Hannam,” and “Scholar of Geumgang,” strongly suggests that he was a professional painter based in Yangyang and the eastern Gangwon region. His paintings are significant not only for their visualization of literati ideals but also for their representation of regional identity and local culture, particularly through depictions of Geumgangsan and Gwandong landscapes. By analyzing Kim’s landscapes, this study clarifies the character and lineage of landscape painting in modern Gangwon Province and highlights the importance of regional art history within the broader narrative of Korean modern art. Ohheon Kim Taeseon’s oeuvre stands as a valuable case that illuminates the intersection of tradition and modernity, central and regional art worlds, and literati ideals with lived experience. It further underscores the necessity of expanding art historical inquiry beyond the central painting circles to include diverse regional perspectives.
