Abstract

This study investigates the status of transmission and reviews institutional support strategies for revitalizing groups dances of Jinju’s traditional dance which is designated as Gyeongnam’s Intangible Heritage, such as Jinju Hanryangmu, a geukmu, and Jinju Pogurakmu, a regional government official’s Jeongjae. These dances are crucial for preserving Jinju's cultural identity and have been designated as valuable cultural assets. However, transmission activities face challenges due to internal and external factors, including changes in the transmission environment. Therefore, this study aims to examine the current state of transmission, identify issues with institutional support, and highlight limitations of transmission activities. Group dances face significant challenges in transmission education and activities compared to individual dances. Also local intangible heritage policies vary depending on regional administration, unlike national policies. Accordingly, three approaches were suggested from the perspectives of policy, facilitators, and transmitters to promote the activation and development of collective dance genres. Firstly, it is necessary to propose a policy direction where the local community takes lead, and improvements should be made on the system of transmitting education. Secondly, efforts should be made to establish a system with intangible cultural heritage experts, allowing smooth communication between municipal/provincial authorities and preservation societies. Third, an educational environment should be established for the transmission and preservation of Jinju’s Intangible Heritage. The changing trends in the intangible cultural heritage system and the challenges faced by transmitting groups in the field have led to the need for changes in regional intangible cultural heritage policies. Therefore interest in local intangible cultural heritage and new changes in the transmission environment.
