Abstract

Callous-unemotional traits are associated with low emotional reactivity in adolescents. However, it is not clear whether responsiveness to positive stimuli is also affected, as previous studies have mainly focused on responsiveness to negative stimuli. The present study results show that callous-unemotional traits are associated with lower emotional responsiveness to negative and positive stimuli in adolescents. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the callous-unemotional trait and emotional reactivity, which are revealed as one of the representative traits of conduct disorder. To this end, by reviewing previous studies related to the relationship between the characteristics of conduct disorder, callous-unemotional traits and behavior problems, and callous-unemotional traits and emotional reactivity, it is intended to be used as basic data for the management and guidance of conduct disorder. The following conclusions are drawn through a review of previous studies on callous-unemotional traits and emotional reactivity conducted so far. First, we show that callous-unemotional traits are dimensionally related to lowering emotional reactivity to both positive and negative stimuli. That is, a lack of participation and responsiveness to positive as well as negative situations may be associated with callous-unemotional traits and related outcomes. Second, we show that the relationship between callous-unemotional traits and emotional reactivity changes with development. These findings could be important in designing interventions for children and adolescents with high levels of callous-unemotional traits.
