Abstract

In June 2020, “The Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Law” was submitted to the Korean Parliament. What came into question among 23 grounds for ‘discrimination’ are three, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. Korean Conservative Christians have raised a strong voice against the legislation from the first, since this law shall encourage the LGBTQ and eventually legalize a homosexual marriage. In this paper, I would like to deal with the appropriate strategy for the opposition movement of the Korean Christian’s against Anti-Discrimination Law. The most important social atmosphere which has to be seriously considered is the fact that Republic of Korea is not a Christian Nation. How do the Christians who live in the secularized and pluralistic society conduct a anti-gay campaign? First, the objectives of the opposition to the Anti-Discrimination Law. We Christians cannot stop the legislation by forcing Christian belief, since the Section 2 of the 20th Article of the Constitution of Korea, strictly bans “the establishment of religion”. Rather, we have to emphasize that Christian faith, worship service, Christian education and propagation should be protected on the basis of “freedom of religious exercises” according to the Section 1 of the 20th Article. We need to show the sense of discernment what to compromise with and what to oppose to, in religious practices, in provision and use of goods, services and facilities, in employment, and in the contents of education in Christian institutes. Also, more positively, we, as citizens with the freedom of conscience, can and must assert our rights. Anti-gay should not be forced violently at a public school, but, I believe, the Christian concept of sex and marriage, can and should be taught as a view. Second, the approach of the Anti-Discrimination Law. The way of struggle of the evangelical Christians in the United States was shown to be ineffective. They could not stop the billow of the sexual revolution by way of political campaign. Many efforts are needed to change the consciousness of people. We have to avoid violent words and instigation of hate, which ironically demonstrate the necessity of the Anti-Discrimination Law. A rational persuasion in the public sphere and refined cultural approaches are needed in order that we appeal to ordinary citizens. Above all, we have to address with the most audible language, that is, practice of love. In addition, I propose to be in unity with other religions and social groups which agree with our cause. We, after all, live in a pluralistic, post-Christian society.
