Abstract
This study analyzes panel data from four key Global South countries-India, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil-over the period 1970 to 2023 to investigate the effects of Official Development Assistance (ODA), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), exports, and imports on economic growth, aiming to provide related policy implications. The findings indicate that ODA, FDI, exports, and imports each contribute to economic growth in the four primary Global South countries analyzed. Specifically, ODA and FDI inflows were associated with increases in economic growth of 0.10% and 0.03%, respectively, with exports exerting the most substantial impact. Additionally, given the notable increase in the average annual imports of these four countries over the past five years, rising import levels have also played a significant role in promoting economic growth. Based on the findings of this study, it is evident that strategies to promote economic growth in Global South countries should focus on attracting FDI to foster job creation, technology transfer, and export growth. In particular, there is a need to advance a trade structure centered on high value-added industries. To achieve this, policies should aim to attract investments by identifying and expanding high value-added sectors, while enhancing incentives and easing regulations to provide robust support for these industries.
