Abstract
As climate change intensifies the frequency and severity of natural disasters, understanding their effects on inequality has become increasingly important. This study employs regional-year panel data to examine the impacts of disasters on income and wealth inequality, distinguishing between casualties and economic damages. Using a fixed-effects model, we analyze the dynamic pathways through which disasters affect distributional outcomes. The results show that the effects of disasters vary by type and measurement criteria. For income inequality, economic damages widened disparities in earned income and exacerbated overall inequality in the short term. By contrast, the effect of casualties was less clear, suggesting indirect channels such as shifts in income composition. For wealth inequality, we find a consistent deepening of disparities, particularly in real estate assets, regardless of disaster type. This pattern reflects the mechanism by which short-term income shocks translate into widening wealth gaps over time. These findings highlight the need for disaster response policies that address both short-term income stabilization and medium- to long-term asset recovery in order to mitigate the inequality-worsening effects of climate disasters.
