Abstract
The Cuban narrative in the third decade of the 19th century markedthe launch of an approach to the black subject within the island. As is well known, the antislavery narrative refers to a group of works written in Cuba during thatperiod. Among the many antislavery works, this article focuses on the characterof Francisco in three seminal novels of the first period, which spans from thebeginning of the period to the emancipation of the slaves: Juan FranciscoManzano’s Autobiography, Anselmo Suárez y Romero’s novel Francisco, andAntonio Zambrana’s El negro Francisco. In the works in question, the authors describe through the character of Franciscothe image of the black slave and the cruelty of the slavery systemfromtheir ownperspective. Although some variation can be noted, Manzano’s life became amodel for these antislavery novels in which Francisco appears as a docile andpassive house servant who suffers unfair punishments at the hands of the whiteslaveholder. These images were repeated by other antislavery writers becauseManzano’s text influenced Suárez y Romero’s novel and Zambrana’s text wasindebted to Suárez y Romero’s work. The rewriting of Francisco does not end inZambrana’s novel, however, but continues into the 20th century with SergioGiral’s movie The Other Francisco, which recreates and criticizes Francisco asa means of incessant critical reflection on what we know and how we know it.
