Abstract

This study aims to examine the extent to which the new member states which joined the EU in 2004 have accommodated the acquis necessary to the effective implementation of the regional policy with particular reference to Poland, the Czech republic and Estonia. In the process, both the regionalization and decentralization of the countries under scrutiny have actually been realized, as these are significant criteria by which to measure the europeanization of the member states. In particular, this study finds it acceptable the conventional scholarly wisdom that the new member states from the former Communist bloc may have difficulties in adapting to the acquis of the regional policy, not least when the administrative and legal infrastructure of these states are put into question. In spite of these arguments, this study also argues that the centralized implementation of the regional policy seems recommendable at least in the short term for the effective implementation of the regional policy.
