최치원은 9세기 후반, 당시 세계 문명 중심지의 하나인 동아시아의 최고 지성인을 대표한다. 그는 또한 당시 한․중 관계의 산 증인인 동시에 두 나라 문화교류의 다리 역할도 하였다. 최치원에 대한 최근의 연구를 바탕으로 하여, 이 논문은 그가 정치인, 정치사상가, 동아시아의 대표 지성인이라는 것을 보여주고자 한다. 그의 인생 자체는 9세기 말, 한 정치인의 성공과 실패에 관한 이야기이다. 그의 삶은 소크라테스, 플라톤과 같은 정치와 철학의 융합, 아리스토텔레스와 같은 철학자의 명상하는 삶, 공자와 맹자와 같은 인간과 하늘의 위대한 통합을 이룩한 대가로서의 삶을 표상한다. 그가 살아가는 과정에서 만들어진 내면화된 사상과 생각은 그의 철학적인 사고의 핵심으로 자리 잡았다. 그는 유교, 불교, 도교의 인도주의적, 심미적 인 주류를 풍류도로 개념화 하였다. 그의 저작은 유교, 불교, 도교의 문화와 정치적 사고가 하나로 융합되어 독특한 한국의 정치사상으로 만들어지는 용광로였다. 최근의 그에 대한 재해석은, 그의 저작이 동아시아 정치사상의 보고일 뿐만 아니라 한국 최초의 정치사상이라는 것을 인정하고 있다. 특히 최근 중국의 정치지도자가 그의 저작에 대해 관심을 가지고 즐겨보고 있다는 점을 고려하면, 최치원은 한국과 중국 관계를 고양시킬 수 있는 무한한 가치를 가진 존재라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Choi Chiwon represents a leading intellectual of the late 9th Century East Asia, the then one of the civilized centers of the world. He is also the witness to the then Korea-China relationship and the one who played the role of bridging cultural exchanges of the two countries. With the current studies on Choi Chiwon as the background, this article attempts to present Choi Chiwon as a politician, a political thinker and as a leading intellectual of East Asia. Choi Chiwon’s life itself was a story of success and failure of a politician at the end of the 9th Century. His life itself exemplifies the unity of political and philosophic life as in Socrates and Plato, the contemplative life of a philosopher in Aristotle, and the life of a master who achieved great unity of heaven and man as in Confucius and Mencius. The internalized idea and concepts that developed in the process of his life crystallized into the core of his political thought. Choi Chiwon conceptualized humanitarian and esthetic mainstreams of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism as Pung-ryu Do. His work was the smelting furnace in which the culture and political thoughts of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism fused into one to create a distinct Korean political thought. Recent reinterpretations of Choi Chiwon reflect the acknowledgement of his works as the repository of the East Asian political thoughts as well as an original political thoughts of Korea.
