시각적 수사학의 문화적 차이 연구: 영국과 한국의 그림책을 중심으로

그림책은 글과 그림이 상호작용하면서 작가의 생각을 전달하는 예술매체이다. 그림책은 글보다는 그림이 더 큰 역할을 담당하기에 그림책 읽기에서 그림의 해석은 매우 중요하다. 그림책을 번역하여 출판할 때 글은 언어와 문화적 특성을 고려하여 번역되지만 그림은 원본 그대로 출판된다. 이렇게 출판된 그림책의 그림은 문화의 특성을 반영하기에 그 해석이 쉽지 않은 경우가 많으며, 이를 위해 시각적 수사학의 문화적 차이를 이해하는 것이 필요하다. 따라서 본 연구는 한국과 영국의 그림책을 중심으로 시각적 수사학의 문화적 차이를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 거울을 소재로한 같은 한국어 제목을 가진 이수지의 [거울속으로]와 앤소니 브라운의 [거울속으로 Through the Magic Mirror]를 선택하였다. 시각적 수사학에 대한 문헌 연구 및 동·서양의 문화적 차이에 대한 심리학과 문화인류학의 연구들을 토대로 두 작품 속 시각적 수사학의 문화적 특징을 분석하였다.그 결과 (1) 암시적 의사소통과 직접적 의사소통, (2) 개인주의와 집단주의 (3) 본성과 상황, (4) 분석적 사고와 직관적 사고, (5) 여백으로 이야기하기와 여백 채우기 의 시각적 수사학의 문화적 차이를 알 수 있었다. 본 연구 결과는 그림책을 통해 동서양의 문화와 다른 문화의 시각적 수사학을 이해하고 해석하는 다문화교육과 예술교육에 활용될 수 있다.
Abstract
Picture books are an art medium. Authors of picture books can convey their thoughts and emotions through interacting words and pictures in the picture books. When picture books are translated and published in another language in another country, the words could be translated and modified in consideration of cultural and linguistic background, but the pictures are published in the original versions of picture books. To know what picture books are really about, readers have to recognize and understand the cultural differences in visual rhetoric. So, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the cultural difference of visual rhetoric in Korean and British picture books, such as Soo-Ji Lee’s Mirror and Anthony Browne’s Through the Magic Mirror. Also, this paper tries to analyze the cultural characteristics of visual rhetoric in the aforementioned works through reviewing books and articles about visual rhetoric and through examining psychological studies and cultural anthropological ones on cultural differences between East and West. As a result, there are the significant cultural differences in using visual rhetoric, such as (1) indirect communication vs. direct communication, (2) individualism vs. collectivism, (3) the theory of human nature vs. the theory of situations (4) analytic thinking vs. intuitive thinking, (5) interpretation of nothingness.
