Abstract

We live in numerous images, in the era of globalization of 21th century. However, communication of image is different than that of language, and we frequently have difficulties in interpreting the images from other cultures. In this point of view, vigorous interchanges of images between countries require the cultural literacy for designers. However, in the filed of design, researches on cultural interpretation and expression are short. This research is to interpret the advertisement design, which is one of the creations of visual culture in era of globalization, in the dimension of the East and the West. For research methods, first, consider the concept and definition of culture in the view of culturology and anthropology. Second, review the cognitive psychology theory of Nisbett, who focused on the difference of culture in the East and the West, compared culture studies of Hall and Hofstede, and deduct items to be compared. Third, by using Barthes’s semiotics analysis model, interpret and analyze the cultural features implied in global advertisements. As a result, advertisement deliver the message by signs like language, image, figurative elements that reflect the cultural features. In linguistic expression, the East showed features of mutual relative and comprehensive thinking like We or Together, and the West focused on I to show individual and analytic features. In image expression, the East stressed on the visual of group, and the West stressed on independence focused in individuals. In the myths that reflect the cultural features, the East showed features of emotions of community with strong interdependence and groupism as high context culture. On the other hand, the West, as low context culture, it showed reasonable rationalism that focused on individualism and independence. Also, each country in the same cultural area showed different features. From now on, I expect that I would be able to suggest the academic base of cultural literacy that a designer should have by processing the research on global design reflecting cultural features continuously.
