그림동화 「괜찮아」의 독서시선 추적 사례 연구 —재미 교민 어린이 독자를 대상으로

이 연구의 목적은 어린이가 그림동화를 볼 때 글과 그림을 주시하는 각 시선의 양과 차이를 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 그림동화의 독서기호를 ‘글’, ‘글로 언급된 그림’, ‘글로 언급되지 않은 그림’으로 나누어 세 관심영역(Area of Interest) 으로 구분하고, 시선추적 장치(Eye Tracker)를 활용하여 각 영역에 대한 주시 시선을 분석하였다. 시선추적 실험은 한글 및 영문 읽기 능력의 차이를 지닌 세 명의 재미 교민 어린이를 대상으로 진행하였다. 대상 작품은 세 가지 독서기호를 고르게 갖추고 있는 그림동화 「괜찮아」를 활용하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 세 어린이 독자가 독서 과정에서 세 영역의 독서기호를 주시한 시선의 총량은 각각 45.24%, 38.91%, 38.86%로 나타났다. 둘째, 세 어린이 독자가 독서시선의 총량 중 글과 그림을 주시한 비율은 각각 0.5:99.5, 26.4:73.6, 44:56 가량으로 영어와 한국어 글자 읽기 능력에 따른 차이가 현저하게 나타났다. 셋째, 세 어린이가 그림 영역 중에서 ‘글로 언급되지 않은 그림’ 영역을 주시한 비율은 44.61%, 50.44%, 51.13%로 글자 읽기 능력과 무관하게 유사하다는 점을 확인하였다. 이 결과로부터 그림동화를 대상으로 하는 어린이 독서교육과 문학교육 및 문자 학습에 시사점을 얻을 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to investigate the eye gaze patterns of three KoreanEnglish bilingual children in the U.S. when reading a Korean picture book, “It’s okay.” The three bilingual children at various written language developmental stages in Korean and English participated in the study. We followed the children’s eye gaze while they looked at the book on a computer monitor and listened to a narration. The proportions of children’s eye gaze fixation time were calculated on three areas of interest: text, narrated pictures, and nonnarrated pictures. The results showed a pattern that (1) the three children’s total fixation time on the three areas of interest were 45.24%, 38.91%, and 38.86% of the total reading time; (2) during their fixation time, the text-to-picture fixation ratios were 0.5:99.5%, 26:73%, and 44:56%; and (3) the children looked at the non-narrated pictures for 44.61%, 50.44%, and 51.13% of their total fixation time. However, the child who speaks Korean fluently more often looked at the narrated pictures more than the nonnarrated pictures. The results of the study can provide significant implications for reading education in bilinguals. Further studies are needed to include Korean monolingual children and to investigate eye gaze patterns across time while reading.
