Abstract

As of 2000, the number of female immigrants into France started to exceed the number of male immigrants. Nevertheless, various statistics claim that female immigrants still remains as those who are tied with the double burden rather than those who have benefited from the immigration. Female immigrants to other nations have been able to enjoy new opportunities and experiences through immigration and to begin a different life through the acquisition of new values; however, female immigrants to France have shown a certain difference in terms of immigration process. First of all, they still have many hindrances to economical activity on top of many difficulties that typical immigrants usually suffer from. In addition to that, female immigrants suffer from their families' concern that they might get assimilated into the french society, and they are also afraid of the fact that they might get excluded from the french society. There are three main reasons for such burdens female immigrants have. First, female immigrants are usually married and at the same time uneducated. Because they are married, they are in such social situation that offers little or no opportunity to get assimilated into the French community. Also, most of the female immigrants did not benefit from the education back in their homeland. Thus, the chance of them getting employed is low - and even if they were employed somehow, their occupations have to be something peripheral. Secondly, immigrant community holds Islamic tradition. That indicates hierarchical family order. People in such community have the tradition of endogamy in order to preserve their social and traditional values and customs. Lastly, assimilationism that the Frenchgovernment believes in forces immigrants to stick to their traditions and customs rather than gives them opportunities to get assimilated to the French society. Those three reasons are primary factors that forces female immigrants to France to remain as those who suffer from the double burden unlike female immigrants to other nations who have been benefited from the immigration.
