Abstract
Some scholars have proclaimed the current period as the ‘age of migration.’ Temporary and permanent movements are globalizing, acceleration, diversifying and feminizing. The number of migrant women in Europe has been increasing rapidly, especially in the last two decades. They have been, however, invisible in the study of migration. Main aim in this article is to bring women in from the margin and make them central to the analysis of migration in Europe. Although women are increasingly the main actors in migration, their status is often restricted by legal structures that view women primarily as dependants. Migrant women have to cope with oppression and discrimination. More recent migrant women find that in Europe, apart from sex work or domestic work, the avenue for employment are almost closed to them. Far from being passive victims of patriarchal social systems and racist immigration policy, migrant women have challenged the constraints on their political activities and engaged in and reworked the definition of the political. Women, whether individually or collectively, resist rather than take their situation for granted. It is resistance rather than the direct adoption of values and behaviour in the new society that iis the basis for change.
