Abstract
The rapid advancement of digital technology has fundamentally reshaped how people engage with cultural heritage. Immersive technologies like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and the metaverse have transformed heritage experiences from passive viewing into interactive, participatory, and sensory-rich encounters. These technologies gained significant momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, broadening the scope for constructing and sharing cultural memory beyond physical limitations. In this evolving context, digital heritage content does more than merely visualize the past; it actively transforms how places are perceived and how collective memories are mediated. This study comparatively examines four cities—Buyeo, Busan, Iksan, and Cheongju—where the National Heritage Night Walk program actively adopted digital media to reinterpret heritage spaces. Drawing on theoretical insights from Relph's concept of place identity, Tuan's experiential perspective on place, and Assmann's theory of cultural memory, the research explores how digital content fosters sensory immersion, cultivates emotional attachment to place, and contributes to the reconfiguration of social memory. Data sources included official planning documents, government reports, media coverage, and field-collected summaries from local program implementation. The findings indicate that digital heritage content significantly enhances affective engagement and promotes place attachment. It also facilitates the formation of shared memories among participants and reinforces symbolic value within local communities. However, notable differences were observed in narrative framing, technological implementation, and user interaction across regions. These variations highlight the necessity of place-based strategies in designing digital heritage initiatives. This study contributes both empirically and theoretically by demonstrating how digital technology serves not only as an interpretive tool but also as a cultural medium, redefining how heritage is experienced, remembered, and integrated into local contexts.
