식민지 모빌리티 시스템과 사이공간의 생명정치 -김남천의 「포화(泡花)」, 「길 위에서」, 「철령까지」를 중심으로

이 글은 존 어리와 미미 셸러가 제안안 ‘새 모빌리티 패러다임’의 관점에서, 김남천의 세 작품, 「포화(泡花)」(1938), 「철령까지」(1938), 「길 위에서」(1939)를 대상으로 식민지 모빌리티 시스템에 의해서 형성되는 ‘사이공간’을 분석함으로써 식민지 모빌리티의 다층적 의미화 방식을 탐구하고, 제국주의 생명권력의 내적 취약성을 폭로하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 세 작품은 식민지 모빌리티 시스템이 어느 정도 완비될 무렵 발표된 작품들로서, 식민지 말기 ‘사이공간’을 중심으로 식민지 모빌리티, 피식민 주체, 생명정치 사이의 복잡한 관계를 다루고 있다. 예를 들어, 「포화(泡花)」(1938)는 종로 한복판에서 자동차가 만들어내는 소음에 둘러쌓인 주인공의 모습을 통해서 모빌리티 테크놀로지의 힘(권력)이 생물학적 신체의 수준에서 작동하는 방식을, 「길 위에서」는 자동차 정류장에서 형성된 ‘인도주의적 교류’를 통해서 생명정당성과 인도주의의 관계, 그리고 그에 기초한 제국주의 생명정치의 역설을, 「철령까지」는 기차 객실에서 발생한 정동적 사건을 통해서 리미널리티 공간의 형성과 제국주의 생명정치의 내적 취약성을 생각할 수 있게 해준다. 김남천의 작품들은 식민지 모빌리티가 주체의 생산을 통해서 식민 통치에 기여하는 장치로서 기능하면서도, 다른 한편으로는 그 내적 취약성을 폭로하는 힘으로서 기능할 수도 있음을 잘 보여준다.
Abstract
This paper aims to delve into the multiple meanings of colonial mobility and expose the inner vulnerability of Imperialistic biopolitics, by analyzing “interspaces” which are formed through colonial mobility system, approaching Namcheon Kim’s three short stories, “Froth” (1938), “To Cheollyung” (1938), “On the Road” (1939) from “the new mobilities paradigm” which is suggested by John Urry and Mimi Sheller. As they were published in the era when Japanese colonial mobility system had been about to be constructed entirely, Kim’s three works handle with the complex relations among colonial mobility, the colonized subject, and biopolitics, centreing on “interspaces” in Joseon of the late colonial era. For examples, “Froth” problematized how the power of mobility technologies had been operated in the biological level, depicting the hero surrounded by the noises of mobilities in the middle of Jongno; “On the Road” presented the relationship between biolegitimacy and humanitarianism, and the paradox of Imperialistic biopolitics based on it, centreing on the “humanitarian exchange” developed at the bus stop; and “To Cheollyung” enables to consider the issues of the formation of liminal space and the inner vulnerability of Imperialistic biopolitics through the event of affective exchange made inside the train. As a result, Kim’s works shows that colonial mobility can be served as the ‘dispositif’ which is contributing to the colonial government on the one hand, and also as the power which exposes its inner vulnerability, on the other.
