Abstract

This study investigates the current state of management and the potential use of film media held by domestic broadcasting companies in the digital era, focusing on the case of TV Literature Hall in UHD, which aired on KBS 2TV in 2023. This program serves as a clear example of how original film footage from the literary drama TV Literature Hall , originally broadcast in the 1980s and 1990s, was converted into high-definition UHD content through digital restoration. The case shows how archival film materials can be actively reused in today’s media environment. To demonstrate that film media in broadcasting archives can serve not only for preservation but also as practical content assets, this research reviews the types of damage found in the original TV Literature Hall film reels and identifies key management issues. The study also provides a detailed analysis of the preservation and restoration work done during the digitization process, along with the post-production procedures that followed. The results show that films processed through high-resolution scanning and color correction can be used again through traditional broadcasting as well as through various digital platforms such as OTT services. This confirms that film media can continue to serve as useful resources in the digital age. These findings highlight the continued value of film media and show that archived materials can expand in use. They also indicate that past audiovisual records are being reinterpreted and used in new ways through current technology and creative methods. The case of KBS-2TV’s TV Literature Hall in UHD shows the need for domestic broadcasting companies to establish structured systems for preserving their film records. The present case study also stresses the importance of ongoing digitization and creative content production based on these materials, helping to redefine the role of film media in broadcast archives and supporting new approaches to content creation.
