Abstract

This study examines how music can record and transmit disaster memory and collective trauma, focusing on the Japanese rock band RADWIMPS and their ten original songs released annually after the 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake. Through textual analysis of lyrics and the creators’ statements, and based on the theoretical frameworks of music sociology and cultural studies, the research reveals that RADWIMPS reconstructs loss, collective memory, existential anxiety, solidarity, healing, and hope through artistic practice. Their approach extends music from a mere artistic product to an information record and a field of social action. The worldview of RADWIMPS goes beyond victimhood or mourning, ethically inheriting the memory of loss and seeking the possibility of love, solidarity, and future-oriented healing even in despair. Notably, the continuous annual release of songs and the donation of album proceeds demonstrate that music can serve as an archive of social trauma and collective memory and as a pathway for communal healing. The study’s limitation is the lack of musical and sonic analysis, suggesting future research directions such as analyzing YouTube videos and user comments for deeper insights in media content and cultural studies. This paper empirically demonstrates that musical creation can be a method of recording and remembering disaster, and that artistic practice can contribute to overcoming social trauma, fostering collective solidarity, and delivering messages of hope for the future.
