Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of video peer modeling and video self-modeling on the performance of meal preparation and cleanup skills in children with autism spectrum. To this end, an alternating-treatment design was applied to three elementary students with autism. and the two interventions were implemented in turns to examine the effectiveness of each intervention. The results were as follows. First, in meal preparation and cleanup skills, Participant A and B showed greater improvement with video peer modeling than with video self-modeling, whereas Participant C demonstrated higher effectiveness with video self-modeling than with video peer modeling. Second, in the maintenance phase of meal preparation and cleanup skills, Participant A and B maintained higher performance levels with video peer modeling than with video self-modeling, while Participant C showed greater maintenance effects with video self-modeling than with video peer modeling. Based on these findings, it can be interpreted that for Participant A and B their interest in peers and level of social motivation influenced the intervention effects, whereas Participant C appeared to be more motivated and confident when using self-modeling. Overall, all three students showed improved performance rates during the intervention phase compared to the baseline, and a certain level of maintenance effect was observed after the intervention ended. These results suggest that video modeling techniques are generally effective strategies for improving daily living skills, such as meal preparation and cleanup, in children with ASD. Furthermore, rather than applying a single type of intervention uniformly, it is important to flexibly select and implement interventions based on each child's individual characteristics and social responsiveness.
