빈곤포르노에 대한 도시빈민의 태도: 쪽방촌의 복지에 내재한 권력의 식민성

본고는 가난한 사람들의 빈곤한 모습을 부각해서 대중의 기부와 후원을 요구하는빈곤포르노 현상에 대해, 당사자들인 쪽방촌 도시빈민들이 지니고 있었던 태도를파악하고 처음으로 표면화한 질적 연구다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 타인의 비참함이 적나라하게 드러나는 빈곤포르노를 보면서 연구 참여자들은 인간이 가지는 일반적인 감정인 연민을 똑같이 보였고, 나아가 힘들게 생존하는 사람들을 도우려는 생각과 더불어 실제 후원까지 이행하기도 했다. 그러나 다른 사람들이 보는빈곤포르노의 대상이 곧 자신이 되는 상황은 용납하지 못했는데, 수치를 피하려는자존심의 문제가 걸려 있기 때문이었다. 참여자들은 빈곤포르노가 빈곤의 문제를해결할 수 없음을 자각하고 있었는데, 쪽방촌에서는 주민들이 빈곤포르노로 인한직접적인 기부나 후원을 받는 경우가 거의 없었기 때문이었다. 그러나 빈곤포르노의 무용성을 인지한 참여자들은 차라리 빈곤을 겪더라도 자존심을 훼손당하지 않기를 더욱 원했다. 한편 빈곤포르노는 단순히 영상으로만 그치지 않고, 그로 인해촉발되는 수많은 사람의 방문과 도움으로 인해 쪽방촌에서 현실화되고 있었다. 쪽방촌에서의 복지는 오만과 편견을 지닌 일종의 권력이 되어 여전히 주민들을 열등하게 대상화하고 있었으며, 빈곤의 문제를 해결하지 못한 채 변하지 않는 쪽방촌을만드는 데에 일조하고 있었다. 복지가 힘의 격차를 내포하고 있다는 점을 의식한이곳의 빈민들은 수치와 분노를 느낄 뿐 아니라 고통의 전시와 박제를 적극적으로거부하고 항의하는 등 빈곤포르노에 굴복하지 않는 저항적 대처를 보여 주었다. 본고의 연구 결과는 빈곤으로 인해 파생되는 주요한 고통의 영역에 빈곤의 문제를 줄곧 소비하는 보수적 빈곤포르노의 식민성이 뿌리박혀 있음을 폭로한다.
Abstract
This paper is a qualitative study that first surfaced the attitudes of the urban poor about the phenomenon of poverty pornography that demands public donations and sponsorship by highlighting the poverty of the poor. The results of the study are as follows. Looking at poverty pornography, which reveals the misery of others, the study participants(among Jjokbangchon residents) showed the same compassion, which is a common emotion of humans, and even donated to help others who are in need as well as thought of helping those who survive difficult times. However, they could not tolerate the situation in which they themselves became the subject of poverty pornography that other people see, because they had emotions of selfpride. Study participants were aware that poverty pornography could not solve the problem of poverty, because residents rarely received direct donations or sponsorships from poverty pornography in Jjokbangchon village. On the other hand, poverty pornography did not stop with just video, but it was becoming a reality in the village, due to the visits and helps of numerous people triggered by it. Welfare in the poverty village became a sort of power with pride and prejudice, still targeting the residents inferiorly, and was contributing to the creation of an unchanging poverty village without solving the problem of poverty. Recognizing that welfare implies a power gap, the poor here not only felt shame and anger, but also showed resistance to poverty pornography, sch as actively rejecting and protesting the exhibition of pain and stuffing. The results of the study reveal that the coloniality of conservative poverty pornography, which constantly consumes the problem of poverty, is rooted in the major areas of suffering arising from poverty.
