Abstract
The poverty of Jjokbangchon villages remains extremely poor, despite the long-standing presence of numerous helping hands. This paper explores the theoretical basis for interpreting the Jjokbangchon, a representative space of poverty in modern Korean society, in connection with colonialism. The study attempts to articulate the problem of dense poverty with colonialism by introducing different concepts of internal colonialism, decolonization and decoloniality, ghetto welfare colonialism, Pauper colonialism, and Appalachian colonialism. Putting each concept together, colonialism can be expanded to a concept that occur within a country, proceed irrespective of race, not be solved only by territorial liberation, and appear through the good actions of helping groups. In particular, in that slums are spatially partitioned areas, colonialism has the usefulness to touch territorial (re)production that cannot be explained by class exploitation alone. If the colonized poor can be established as a new black concept, the problem of poverty can be approached as a subtle relationship between the poor and the outsiders surrounding the space, beyond just analyzing individual/social factors. It is hoped that the decolonialism tool can be used as a clear method that penetrates various events that occur in the community of poverty.
