시각의 다원화 및 경계 넘어서기: 학술단행본을 통해 본 해외 한국학 연구 동향, 2007-2012

이 연구는 북미권에서 2007년부터 2012년 사이에 이루어진 한국학 업적물 가운데 학술단행본(monograph)들을 소개하고 그 연구 경향을 검토하기 위해 작성되었다. 구체적으로, 북미권 대학출판부를 통해서 출판된 총 16종 단행본 중 종교 분야에서 7종, 역사 분야에서 7종, 문학 분야 2종을 검토한 결과 다음과 같은 경향이 있음이 발견되었다. 연구 분야와 시기별 특징이라는 관점에서 본다면, 종교(철학)와 역사분야에 대한 연구가 두드러졌으며 식민지시기에 대한 관심이 가장 깊었다. 또한 방법론적 특징으로서, 전통적인 분과학문의 경계를 넘어서는 학제간연구경향이나 다원적인 접근법이 두드러졌다. 필자는 이러한 시각의 다원화 및 학제간연구의 경향을 1990년대 포스트모더니즘 담론의 영향과 북미권 대학에 개설된 동아시아학과 혹은 아시아학과에서 이루어지는 학제간연구가 해외 한국학 연구자들의 개인적인 연구 영역 내에서 구체화되는 것으로 이해하였다.
Abstract
This paper examines the works of scholarship, in particular academic monographs, in overseas Korean Studies from 2007 to 2012. Confining the scope of review to the monographs that were published by university presses in North America for this period, the author reviews and analyzes 16 works in total. As outcomes of this review, the author indicates three major tendencies that have formed overseas Korean Studies over the last five years. Firstly, colonial period is much more focused than any other time periods in Korean history. Secondly, the number of monographs whose topics are related with religion and history are much higher than other disciplinary topics. Lastly, such methodological features as the interdisciplinary research and the multi-dimensional approach are outstanding among the works of overseas Korean Studies in this period. With regard to the interdisciplinary research trend, conclusively, the author suggests that it should be attributed to the pedagogical feature of East Asian Studies program in North America.
