해외 한국학의 동향 분석을 위한 공동연구의 한 부분인 이 글은 2007년에서 2012년까지 영어권 주요 학술지 4종에 실린 한국학 관련 논문 95편을 분석한 것이다. 분석 대상이 된 전체 논문들 중 역사가 29편(30.6%), 사회과학 13편(13.7%), 문화학 12편(12.6%), 문학 10편(10.5%), 영화 10편(10.5%), 인류학 7편(7.4%), 종교사상 7편(7.4%), 음악 5편(5.3%), 언어학과 미술사가 각각 1편씩(1.05%)에 달한다. 이를 통해 한국학 연구의 주제가 상당히 다양해지고 있음을 알 수 있다. 특히 북한이나 소수자, 영화, 음악 등이 한국학 전문 학술지들의 특집을 장식할 정도로 현재의 추세에 순응하는 실용적 경향이 간파된다. 다른 한편으로 아시아학계의 대표 학술지인 Journal of Asian Studies에서 한국학의 양적‧질적 약진이 두드러져, 세계 아시아학계에 한국학이 안착하고 있음을 보여준다. 전근대 연구의 기반이 취약한 점은 여전히 아쉬움으로 남지만, 국내외 학자들 사이의 소통이 원활해지고 있음은 무척 고무적이다. 앞으로 이러한 공명의 장을 더욱 확대하기 위해서 국내외의 연구 성과를 각각 영어와 한국어로 소개하는 번역 학술지의 창간이 요망된다.
Abstract
As a part of a joint research project analyzing recent scholarships in overseas Korean Studies, this article focuses on 95 articles published in the four major American journals from 2007 to 2012. Among those articles, there are 29 (30.6%) in history, 13 (13.7%) in social science, 12 (12.6%) in cultural studies, 10 (10.5%) in literature, 10 (10.5%) in film, 7 (7.4%) in anthropology, 7 (7.4%) in religion and thought, 5 (5.3%) in music, and one of each (1.05%) in linguistics and art history. This shows that the research topics in the Korean Studies have been considerably diversified. On the one hand, the special topics such as North Korea, minorities, films and music issued in those journals seem to indicate the pragmatic nature of the scholarships that complies with recent trends. On the other hand, it is remarkable to note the progress of the Korean Studies in quality and quantity in the Journal of Asian Studies which is no doubt the leading journal in the field. The growth seems to have proved the 'positioning of Korean Studies' as one of the major fields in the Asian Studies. Although it is still regrettable to point out the weakness in the foundation of the pre-modern Korean studies, it is desirable to find more active communications between domestic and overseas scholars. The author finally suggests a new translation journal for the respective scholarships in the hope to expand the 'interactions.
