Abstract

This study compares and analyzes the differences between draft manuscripts and printed editions of gwamun (科文) from the Joseon period, with particular focus on chaekmun (策文). Unlike previous research, which primarily examined the process of proofreading and editing in general literary works, this paper explores the philological significance of gwamun as official and institutional texts produced in the form of civil service examination answers. The analysis reveals three major characteristics of editorial revision in gwamun. First, formal constraints: phrases were added or modified to achieve symmetrical sentence structures characteristic of the Byeollyeomun style (騈儷文風). Second, political constraints: potentially sensitive vocabulary or expressions—those critical of the monarch or connected to factional disputes—were softened or replaced. Third, the the pursuit of completeness: errors in classical source citations, logical inconsistencies, and awkward sentence structures were corrected and refined. A comparison between sigwon (試券) and gwamunjip (科文集) reveals that the former preserved the original form more faithfully, resulting in fewer revisions, while the latter underwent extensive editing to conform to contemporary literary norms and reader expectations. These revisions went beyond the simple correction of scribal errors, encompassing semantic and logical restructuring that reflected both the literary conventions and editorial practices of the time. Furthermore, this study confirms that gwamun were more than simple examination scripts; they were complex texts imbued with political, social, and cultural implications. Editorial interventions not only refined the texts stylistically but also reflected the political climate and literary ideals of their time. Thus, gwamun serve as invaluable historical sources for understanding not only individual scholarly competence but also the value systems and power structures of the period. By presenting concrete examples of gwamun editing practices, this study offers valuable material for research on Joseon-era literary anthologies and examination writing styles. It also underscores the need for further research that incorporates a wider range of textual forms and source materials.
