Abstract
This paper examines Kim Ji-ha's Hwangto (1970), Shin, Gyeong-Rim's Nongmu (1973), and Seo Jeong-ju's Jilmajae Sinhwa (1975), published in the early to mid-1970s, from the perspective of their poetic responses to the loss of ‘place’ and the era of industrialization. ‘Industrialization’ is a concept that denotes the character of Korean society in the 1970s. Until the 1960s, Korea was an agriculture-centered society with a weak industrial base, but in the 1970s, it entered a full-fledged era of industrialization. This societal change can be summarized as the process by which ‘place’ transforms into ‘space’. According to geographers, ‘place’ refers to a familiar and emotionally attached location that provides psychological stability to individuals, whereas ‘space’ is an abstract world that can be converted into area, volume, and distance, or where we exist anonymously. Therefore, the transformation of ‘place’ into ‘space’ signifies that the familiar world, in which individuals project value and feel comfort, gradually changes into an abstract world. In previous studies, the poetry of Kim Ji-ha and Shin, Gyeong-Rim in the 1970s was understood from the perspective of ‘people's poetry’, while Seo Jeong-ju's mid-period poetry, including Jilmajae Sinhwa, was studied in connection with the ‘Silla spirit’ and the problem of ‘eternity’. In this regard, it can be said that their poetic orientations were quite different. However, this paper sought to find a commonality in their poetry collections published in the early to mid-1970s: a poetic response to the era of industrialization. While Kim Ji-ha and Shin, Gyeong-Rim critically depicted the reality of community disintegration, such as ‘Hwangto’ (yellow earth) and ‘farming villages’, through negative affect, Seo Jeong-ju can be said to have confronted the negative reality of ‘place’ loss by presenting an ideal world called ‘Jilmajae’ based on positive affect.
