Abstract

This article discusses the academic origins and literary consciousness of Hong Seom (洪暹, 1504–1585), a writer in the mid-16th century. Hong Seom was a bureaucrat in the early- and mid-16th century—during the rise of Dohak (道學) when the role and status of Sajang (詞章) was still emphasized. Hong Seom was recognized for his literary ability from an early age, and thus served various important positions related to literature; he was also appointed to Daejehak (大提學). Therefore, he succeeded in following the footsteps of his maternal grandfather Song Jil (宋軼) and his father Hong Eon-pil (洪彦弼), thereby ascending to the position of Yeonguijeong (領議政), and achieving a high position in both literature and politics. Moreover, he had studied under Jo Gwang-jo (趙光祖) to lay his academic foundation, had a close relationship with Lee Hwang (李滉), and was bright in Yehak (禮學), such as compiling Doklyeyupyeon (讀禮類篇). This complex background of growth and friendship provides a glimpse into the possibilities of his multifaceted academic perspective. Regarding Hong Seom’s literary works, although the prevailing opinion was that it “rejected splendor and pursued faithfulness,” it is possible to consistently confirm the perspective that affirms the function and utility of Mun (文), which contributes to the realization of the Do (道). Examining his literary activities and works, his will to inherit the literature of the previous era and the friendly gaze toward literature stand out as characteristics of his literary consciousness. Some examples of his works include poems written with a Ming (明) envoy when participating as a member of the Wonjeopsa (遠接使) and Gwanban (館伴), compiling and writing a Hwanghwajip (皇華集), and producing works related to gyehoe (契會) and government offices. The life trajectory and work activities of Hong Seom show a section of the literary world in the 16th century that was developed in a complex manner, without being constrained by a certain frame. This article enables a thorough understanding of Hong Seom’s works and literary status. Moreover, this can help to increase interest in the geological topography of this period, which has suffered from sluggish research.
