중국 디자인 혁신의 배후 도시 네트워크와 주요 도시의 역할 분석

디자인은 혁신의 새로운 동력으로 주목받아 왔지만 객관적 지표와 통계의 부재로 실증적 연구가 미진했다. 오늘날 중국 디자인의 현주소를 파악하는데도 같은 문제가 있었고, 질적 비평과 주관적 판단에 의존하는 바가 컸다. 이 같은 상황을 타개하기 위해 본 연구는, 세계 3대 디자인상 중 하나인 iF 디자인상을 수상한 중국 디자인 1천여 건의 정보를 데이터베이스로 구축하고 양적 분석을 시도하였다. 분석의 초점은 세계적으로 인정받은 중국 디자인을 창출한 배후 도시간 네트워크와 네트워크 속 주요 도시의 역할에 두었다. 다양한 네트워크 분석 기법을 통해 본 연구는, 중국 신흥도시 선전의 부상과 상하이의 복합적 역할을 확인할 수 있었으며, 그 뒤를 잇는 2선 도시들의 진면목도 파악할 수 있었다. 더불어 본 연구는, 개인의 자유와 체제에 대한 도전이 제한적이라는 중화인민공화국에도 창의성과 디자인 혁신의 공간이 있음을 밝히고, 이념적 이분법을 넘어‘제한적 창의성’에 관한 논의가 추후 심화될 필요가 있음을 제기한다.
Abstract
Although design has been hailed as an important alternative source of innovation, however, due to the lack of objective measures and available statistics, analysis of design has actually been neglected in social sciences. In the same vein, contemporary China’s design and design-inspired innovation capacity has rarely been evaluated with reliable evidences. Against this backdrop, in this study, the author created a dataset of more than one thousand Chinese designs that have won the world-renowned iF Design Award, and conducted a series of network and bibliometric analyses. Through the analyses, the author revealed specific roles of major Chinese cities (esp. Shenzhen and Shanghai) and the evolutionary changes of the inter-city network. Also, this study draws scholarly attention to the possible level and scope that the PRC’s creativity might reach, which constitutes a topic of ‘bounded creativity in socialist countries’ that should be addressed more systematically in the near future.
