Abstract

Choi Seo-Hae created several Manchurian background novels. This paper examines the meaning of Manchuria in the literature of the Choi Seo-Hae, focusing on the concept of space and place and the placelessness. In addition, through the aspect of overlapping gendered dichotomy with the shaping of space and place, we tried to examine the way in which the unique cognition of the novel is based on narrative. The Manchurian background novel of the Choi Seo-Hae is shaped by those who do not have a place that is the source of stability and identity. In Manchurian background novels of the Choi Seo-Hae, Manchurian can be regarded as an act of leaving for the place that is the origin of stability and identity. However, in Manchuria, which is hard to find, the characters do not find any place sensitivity due to poverty, Chinese and Japanese influence. This experience of loss of place is repetitively expressed through the terrible downfall and suffering of a woman, such as a mother and wife or daughter. This can be understood as linked to the custom of gender representations that mankind has had for a long time. We have understood the place in relation to women as gender. In spite of the fact that space and place are not mutually contradictory but mutually constitutive, humanity has had a male-centered view of the place as a woman's domain. For the first time, the Manchurian can be imagined as a place to provide a sense of stability and meaning that can not be experienced in Korea. But life in Manchuria shows that the place is irrelevant to the place. It is evident through the desperate decline of the female figures who represent the place. In addition, the cold weather of Manchuria and the collapse of the house reveal the loss of the place that Koreans experienced in Manchuria. What is interesting is that, through the process of the disappearance of the function of the place as a place, the Joseon is newly reconstructed as a new place. This is ironic and at the same time an example of the most nationalistic consciousness, considering that the Koreans could not experience Joseon as a place in the first place.
