Abstract

This study examines the poetic resistance strategies deployed by Chilean poet Nicanor Parra during the Pinochet dictatorship (1973–1990). Focusing on Parra’s Cristo de Elquí series and his later ecological poetry, this analysis explores the underlying structural logic of anti-poetry that informs these works and examines how they indirectly embed political critique under a repressive censorship regime. This process reveals that Parra employed a unique resistance approach, distinguishing him from contemporaries like Pablo Neruda and Raúl Zurita, who relied on more direct and confrontational modes. Parra’s strategies involve multi-layered techniques: self-retraction, metaphorical detour, strategic silence, and the deconstruction of power through parody and irony. These devices enabled him to maintain an ostensibly apolitical posture while effectively circumventing censorship, thereby delivering a fundamental critique of authoritarian rule. This study argues that Parra’s methodology constitutes not merely an evasive strategy but a sophisticated survival tactic—one designed to simultaneously secure both poetic freedom and political voice under extreme repression. In doing so, it provides a more nuanced perspective on the complexity and aesthetic possibilities of literary resistance under dictatorial regimes.
