Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine how the variables of participating in physical activity affect the 10 sub-scales of the physical self-concept and total physical self-concept of people with cerebral palsy participating in physical activity regularly, as well as the effect of the disability class of people with cerebral palsy on total physical self-concept. The 150 people with cerebral-palsy who are participating in regular physical activity were selected. The method of measuring physical self-concept developed by Byung-joon Kim (2001) called the "Physical Self-Concept Scale Korean Version" was used. Through a pilot test and survey interview, awkward or vague questions were revised by 3 specialists panel, thereby assuring content validity, and the construct validity of the survey was achieved through confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability was tested by verifying Cronbach's α for internal consistency of instrument and reliability was relatively high at .754~.902. Analysis was done by using Multiple regression analysis and One-way ANOVA. As a result of the analysis, the frequency of participating in sport per week, which was one of the variables of participation in physical activity, played a positive role in the overall total physical self-concept of people with cerebral-palsy as well as sub-elements (such as sports ability, physical activity, flexibility, and total physicality), and depending on the type of sports participation, total physical self-concept and sub-scales were relatively higher for group sports and one-on-one sports than individual sports. On the other hand, disability class did not have an effect on physical self-concept. These results suggest that there can be positive effects on physical self-concept and sub-scales for people with cerebral palsy when they participate in physical activity as many times as possible in a week as well as one-on-one or group physical activity.
