지금으로부터 약 70 여년 전 베커는 미국 독립선언서에 대한 연구를 필자와는 다른 방식으로 수행한 바 있다. 베커는 먼저 독립선언서의 의미가 그 자체로서 자명하다고 판단하지 않았다. 대신 그것의 이면에 깔려있는 신념의 풍토(climates of opinion)를 13세기 유럽의 자연권 사상으로 파악한 다음, 그 양자를 결합시켜 독립선언서의 의미를 심층적으로 해석해 내고 있었다. 그러면 필자의 연구는 베커의 연구를 대체하는 것인가? 그렇지는 않다. 필자의 연구는 미국 독립선언서의 의미를 새로운 시각에서 해석해 본 것이었을 뿐, 아직 경험적 검증까지는 거치지 못했기 때문이다. 베버의 용어로 표현할 때 전자는 의미적합성(Sinnhaft adaequat)을 의미하며, 후자는 인과적합성(Kausal adaequat)을 의미한다. 따라서 필자의 연구는 베커의 연구를 대체하는 것이 아니라, 추후의 비교 연구를 통해 인과적합성을 검증 받아야 할 하나의 가설에 머무는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 필자가 이 논문에서 검토한 내용은 기존의 연구 성과와 거의 모든 측면에서 상충하고 있다. 그리고 그것은 필자가 처음부터 정확하게 의도한 것이었다. 그 이유는 기존의 연구 성과를 일방적으로 부정하고자 했기 때문이 아니라, 기존의 연구들이 딛고 서 있는 개념의 체계가 너무도 낡은 것이라 판단했기 때문이다. 그러한 개념체계에 의존해서는 현상을 더 이상 해명할 수 없다는 사실을 세계 학계는 이미 오래 전에 확인한 바 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 기존의 낡은 개념체계가 연구의 현장에서 관행적으로 준수되고 있는 것이 학계의 현주소라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 우리가 기존의 낡은 개념을 혁신하지 못한다면 언제까지나 ‘잘못된 개념의 희생자’를 스스로 자임하는 일이 될 것이다.
Abstract
Neither liberalism nor classical republicanism was the motivation system of Revolutionary people at war. It took rise in Calvinism. Religious individualism and holy community is derived from the idea of predestination, the first distinctive feature of Calvinism. It is individualism and communalism based upon the certainty of election and the sense of responsibility to render service under the Lordship of Christ. Religious individualism looked like more and more Macpherson’s conception of possessive individualism, and holy community looked like more and more classical republicanism with the progress of secularization, however. To Calvinists, the most important question was the certainty of election. How is it possible to be certain that one is of the number of the elect? From the time of Beza, the current reply was so called ‘inner‐worldly asceticism.’ It means that good works, which are outward signs of the inward state of grace, can prove the fact of election. In the spheres of political activities, according to Max Weber, this inner‐worldly asceticism can be interpreted like this. “Puritanism, with its particularism of grace and vocational asceticism, believes in the fixed and revealed commandments of a God who is otherwise quite incomprehensible. It interprets God’s will to mean that these commandments should be imposed upon the creatural world by the means of this world, namely, violence – for the world is subject to violence and ethical barbarism.” This is the very motivation system of Revolutionary people at war. In other words, American Revolution is a kind of religious war for the purpose of the certainty of election.
