우리가 접할 수 있는 대부분의 미국 혁명 연구가 혁명기 식민지에 산재했던 일차 자료를 광범위하게 섭렵하면서 사건의 세부 전개를 세밀하게 기술하는 형태를 취하고 있다는 점을 감안할 때 미국 혁명의 독립성은 자명한 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 미국 혁명의 독립적 이미지란 랑케 사학의 현재주의가 빚어낸 추상의 신화일 수도 있는 것이었다.미국 혁명을 전후로 미국 역사의 독특한 패턴이 장구하게 관류하는 것처럼 보인다는 사실은 우리에게 미국 혁명을 하나의 '반사적 행위'로 파악할 수 있다는 점을 시사한다. 이와 같이 미국 혁명을 반사적 행위로 파악할 때, 미국 혁명을 해명하는 과제는 ① 상징 ② 상징의 의미 ③ 상징적 지시를 각각 해명하는 것으로 요약할 수 있다. 이와 같은 특징들을 갖고 있는 미국 혁명의 상징을 파악하고 난 다음의 과제는 그러한 특징들의 의미를 적절하게 해석해 내는 것이라고 할 수 있는데, 이를 위해서는 미국 혁명의 '상징의 의미'를 추가로 포착해야만 한다. 이에 대해 미국 혁명의 연구자들은 미국 혁명을 크게 세 가지 방향에서 해석해 왔는데, ① 자유주의 ② 공화주의 ③ 캘빈주의가 각각 그것이다.
Abstract
To understand American Revolution correctly, first of all, we have to grasp the motivation system of Revolutionary people at war. It is very difficult of access to their motivation system by means of traditional Rankean history, however. With the help of the thought of A. N. Whitehead, especially his Symbolism, we can break through the barrier to progress. Whitehead said. "Thus the social symbolism has a double meaning. It means pragmatically the direction of individuals to specific actions; and it also means theoretically the vague ultimate reasons with their emotional accomplishments, whereby the symbols acquire their power to organize the miscellaneous crowd into a smoothly running community." It means that we can regard social symbolism as a motivation system of social action. After restudying American Revolution in the context of historical process, I can conclude that it is not symbolically conditioned action but reflex action. To understand reflex action, we have to recover the meaning of the symbols. To understand American Revolution, therefore, we have to recover the meaning of the symbols of Revolutionary people at war. What is that? Is it Liberalism? Or Republicanism ? Or Calvinism?
