이 연구의 목적은 IB에서 수업과 긴밀히 연계하여 학생의 주체적인 탐구 능력을 형성적이자 총합적으로 평가하는 확장형 에세이(extended essay)의 특징을 살펴보고, 이것이 우리나라 중등교육에 주는 함의를 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 본고는 IB 확장형 에세이의 특징으로 학문 문식성을 평가, 비판적 지식 탐구 능력을 평가, 과정 중심 성찰 평가를 도출하였다. 각각의 특징이 중등교육에 주는 함의점을 논의하면 다음과 같다. IB의 확장형 에세이가 교과 수업과 연계하여 학문 문식성을 평가하는 것은 우리 작문교육도 다른 교과들과 협력하여 수업과 과제, 평가 방안을 마련하는 것을 제안한다. 또한 화석화된 지식의 습득이 아닌 지식에 대하여 비판적으로 이해하고 구성하는 탐구 실천 과정을 강조하는 IB의 확장형 에세이는 지식 이론 수업과 연계하여 지식에 대한 비판적 탐구의 기회를 제공하고 이에 대한 평가 방안을 제시한다는 점에서 주목된다. 이는 우리나라 논술형 과제에서 지식에 대한 비판적 탐구 기회를 제공하는 것을 고려하게 한다. 마지막으로 IB 확장형 에세이는 학생의 탐구 과정에 대한 성찰을 평가한다는 의의가 있다. IB 확장형 에세이 평가에서 강조하고 있는 학생 주도적 연구 진행에 대한 안내와 평가, 검증 방안은 우리나라 작문교육에서 소논문 과제를 도입할 때 고려될 수 있다. IB 확장형 에세이 평가는 우리나라 중등 교육 및 논술형 평가가 나아갈 방향을 마련하는 데 의미 있는 아이디어를 제시한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the IB extended essay assessment, which links closely to classroom instruction and assesses students’ self-directed inquiry in summative and formative ways, in order to provide implications for writing instruction in Korea. The three characteristics drawn from the IB assessment were disciplinary literacy assessment, knowledge-inquiry assessment, and process-focused reflection assessment. The following are key implications of each characteristic. First, the IB extended essay assessment, which connects the writing task and subject instructions, suggests that Korean writing instruction needs to consider cooperating with other subjects in order to collaboratively develop classes, writing tasks, and assessments. Second, the IB extended essay assessment emphasizes the processes of inquiry practice based on a critical approach to knowledge construction rather than on memorizing fossilized knowledge. This suggests that we carefully consider essay tasks that provide students opportunities to perform critical inquiry on what we regard as knowledge. Lastly, the IB extended essay is being watched with keen interest due to its assessment of students’ inquiry processes focusing on students’ reflections on self-directed study. In developing research essay tasks for writing instruction in Korea, we need to ponder how the IB extended essay provides specific guidelines, assessment, and verification procedures that emphasize self-directed research
