Abstract

Roger Sessions adopted twelve-tone technique relatively late in his life, after a long and distinguished career. Unlike many serial composers of his generation, he attempted to be free to use the row as he pleased. It is evident, however, that the row is definitely a source of material from which the basic motives and the melodic/harmonic gestures are derived and subsequently varied. Sessions went further and transformed his chromaticism into twelve-tone technique. In so doing, he created a new twelve-tone style that unified these two differing techniques. In his twelve-tone music, therefore, it is not difficult to find tonal or chromatic elements. In addition, he successfully put into practice the compositional principles that he taught: progression (or cumulation), association, contrast and balance. The objective of this analysis of Sessions’ Five pieces for Piano (1974-75), no. 1 and no. 4 is to examine the ways in which he employed his row while preserving his own classical past of tonality, form, and motivic cohesion, and how he applied his compositional principles in practice. In this piece, Sessions especially tended to work with motives of the trichords such as major or minor triads (037) in the highest and the lowest voices, extending them into longer lines. Sessions’ assimilation of different stylistic elements and techniques not only reflects on the past but also shows remarkable possibilities for growth and development of serial music.
