뮤지컬에 등장하는 문제적 어머니들의 억압과 전복― <베르나르다 알바>, <넥스트 투 노멀>, <형제는 용감했다>를 중심으로

이 글에서는 뮤지컬 <베르나르다 알바>, <넥스트 투 노멀>, <형제는 용감했다>에 등장하는 문제적 어머니들의 심리적 억압과 그 억압의 귀환이 뮤지컬의 환상성을 통해 드러나는 양상을 살펴보고, 어머니 캐릭터들이 결과적으로 작품들 속에서 수행하는 전복적 기능을 분석했다. 이를 위해 정신분석학적 페미니즘의 일부 개념들을 활용했으며, 노래와 춤이라는 뮤지컬의 중요한 요소들과 함께 주요 공간적 배경인 집의 장소성에도 주목했다. 이 뮤지컬들에는 부조리한 사회의 가치를 내면화하다가 집안에서 갈등을 일으키는 어머니들이 등장한다. 베르나르다는 20세기 초 스페인 안달루시아의 보수적 문화 속에서, 다이애나는 동시대 미국의 가족주의 속에서, 순례는 20세기 후반의 안동지역 유교가부장 문화 속에서 억압을 겪는다. 이들은 각각 강박적인 가부장제의 대리인으로서, 망상증과 우울증 환자로서, 치매 환자로서 가족들에게 갈등을 불러일으킨다. 나라와 시대는 다르지만 세 명의 억압은 모두 남근로고스적인 상징계 사회의 구조 속에서 이루어지고, 그 억압된 것의 귀환이 비체 캐릭터들을 통해 표현된다는 점에서 공통적이다. 유령 같은 환각인 게이브, 치매에 걸린 예언자적 할머니인 호세파, 순례의 영혼(처녀귀신)인 오로라가 바로 그러한 캐릭터들이다. 이때 치매 언어, 정신질환자의 언어, 시적 언어 등 기호계적 양식이 상징계의 언어에서 누락된 억압을 드러낸다. 그리고 이러한 기호계적 양식은 뮤지컬의 환상성 안에서 집시 음악과 플라멩코, 록음악과 불협화음, 패스티시 등으로도 표현된다. 결국 문제적 어머니들이 억압으로 인해 발생시키는 갈등은 그들을 둘러싼 사회 환경을 비판적으로 인식하게 하고, 이러한 갈등은 인물들이 집의 경계를 넘어가도록 만든다. 이는 현실에서는 죽음이나 가출과 같은 모습일지라도 억압적인 남근로고스 사회를 능동적으로 벗어나는 전복적인 행위로 해석할 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the way the repression as well as the return of the repressed of mothers who cause conflicts in their families are revealed through the fantastic nature of musical theatre in Bernarda Alba, Next to Normal, and Brothers Were Brave and to analyze the subversive roles that the mothers make in the musicals. This paper adopts some concepts of psychoanalytic feminism and focuses on the place, a house, the main spatial background of the musicals along with songs and dances, the essential elements of the genre. In the musicals, there are mothers who cause problems in the process of internalizing the social values of the absurd society: Bernarda in the conservative (misogynist) Andalusia in the early 20th century, Diana in the contemporary American familism, and Sunrye in the patriarchal Confucian society of Andong in the late 20th century. As representatives of their obsessive patriarchal systems, each of them causes conflicts in the family as a delusional, a melancholic, or a dementia patient, Their nationalities and the living periods are different, but their repressions are all derived from the structure of the phallogocentric symbolic society. The returns of the repressed also all turn up with the abject characters—an imaginary son Gabe who died 17 years ago, a prophetic grandmother Josefa who suffers from dementia, and Orora, a Sunrye’s ghost. The semiotic of the languages of a dementia patient and a psycho as well as the poetic language of musicals reveals the repression omitted in the symbolic. Gypsy music, flamenco, rock music, dissonance, and pastiches also express the repressions and their returns in the works. The conflicts caused by problematic mothers eventually make characters perceive their social environment critically and the conflicts go beyond the wall of each house. Although shown in a form of death or a runaway from home, they can be interpreted as subversive acts that voluntarily escape from the repressive phallogocentric society.
