Abstract

The purpose of this research is to verify the relationship between religious orientation and bystander roles in bullying situation, focusing on a mediating effect of prosocial behavior and morality. 370 adolescents were selected as subjects. Major findings are as in the following. First, bystanders categorized as bully-followers, outsiders, and defenders of victims showed significant differences in the levels of external and internal religious orientation, prosocial behavior and morality. Having the low level of morality, adolescents tend to be the bully-followers. As the level of the external religious orientation is high, adolescents are more likely to be outsiders. Internal religious orientation, prosocial behavior and morality have a negative influence on outsiders. Also, internal religious orientation and prosocial behavior were identified as significant predictors of defenders. Second, prosocial behavior and morality are identified as significant partial mediating variables between the internal religious orientation and bystander roles. The results imply that adolescents' internal religious orientation has indirectly influence on their bystander roles in bullying situation when they have the high level of prosocial behavior or morality.
