Abstract

Science education has been shifting toward student-driven inquiry and questioning as central components of classroom learning. However, the successful realization of this ideal in actual classrooms requires not only changes in instructional strategies but also careful consideration of how teachers perceive science and construct lessons based on those perceptions. This study explores how an elementary teacher’s conception of science changes through reflective practice, what factors contribute to that change, and what dilemmas arise as a result. A qualitative case study was conducted with a 10th-year elementary school teacher over the course of one semester, focusing on science classes. Data were collected through teacher journals, post-lesson conferences, interviews, and classroom recordings, and analyzed inductively. The results revealed a gradual transformation in the teacher’s conception of science—from viewing it as absolute truth, to recognizing it as a discipline characterized by uncertain inquiry practices, and ultimately as a trial-and-error process embedded in everyday life. This shift was facilitated by three interrelated factors: interactive support from the researcher, self-directed reflection through reading and lived experiences, and practical validation through classroom enactment. As the teacher’s conception evolved, the dilemmas she experienced also deepened—from being a knowledge transmitter who lacked scientific understanding, to an inquiry facilitator who could not conduct inquiry themselves, and finally to an inquirer who, despite the transformation, remained bound by the role of a ‘teacher’. This study illustrates that a teacher’s epistemic growth is not linear, but rather a dynamic and recursive process shaped by reflection, practice, and evolving tensions. It suggests that teacher education should support both conceptual change and reflective enactment.
