Abstract

This paper explores Taiwan’s unique positionality in the Sinophone literary world, using the case of Liao Yiwu’s 󰡔Wuhan󰡕 and its publication in Taiwan to analyze its political, cultural, and historical implications. By examining Taiwan’s historical context, publishing freedom, and literary production during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study seeks to illustrate how Taiwan functions as a crucial platform for Sinophone writing, particularly for dissident and exiled writers. As a former Cold War frontline, Taiwan’s cultural development has been shaped by the political divide between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. Unlike China, which imposes strict control over speech and publishing, Taiwan maintains a relatively open publishing market, allowing politically critical and banned books to be published. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while the Chinese government strictly censored discussions about the outbreak, Taiwan provided a space for free documentation and publication. This enabled works like Wuhan, which criticizes China’s pandemic policies, to be published and gain international recognition. Furthermore, in recent years, Taiwanese literature has gained increasing influence in East Asia, including South Korea. This is due not only to Taiwan’s unique historical experiences and multicultural background but also to its central role in Sinophone literature. This paper argues that Taiwan is more than just a geographic entity—it is a cultural and intellectual crossroads that fosters diverse literary expressions, preserves historical memory, and upholds freedom of speech. Through a close reading and analysis of Wuhan, this study further investigates Taiwan’s role and significance in Sinophone literature, offering a critical perspective on the dynamics and transformations of contemporary Sinophone writing.
