Abstract

This study analyzes the 2024 Chinese film YOLO, directed by Jia Ling, by combining ethical literary criticism with a theory of identity transformation. It explores how individuals in contemporary society reconstruct identity through ethical choice and moral decision-making, ultimately moving toward identity transcendence. In particular, the paper closely examines the protagonist Le Ying's experience of identity transformation, focusing on the ethical dilemmas she faces and her corresponding moral decisions. In doing so, the study clarifies her trajectory of subjective growth—from a “former self” to a “new self”—as well as the internal conflicts and practical responses that accompany this process. The findings demonstrate that Le Ying's transformation is neither a passive adaptation to social norms or external pressures nor a result of dependence on others’ recognition. Rather, it emerges from active, embodied practice across the physical, psychological, and behavioral dimensions. Furthermore, her identity transcendence operates as an ethical practice: when confronted with ethical dilemmas and inner conflict, she redefines the value of her existence through agency and action instead of avoidance or submission. Accordingly, the study argues that, in modern society, identity transformation is actively constructed and continuously re-established through subjective will and sustained practice, rather than formed by external oppression or normative imposition.
