Abstract

This study analyzes the Chinese film "Like a Rolling Stone(出走的決心)" to examine how late middle-aged women experience marginalization within familial and social structures, and how they construct subjectivity and attain recognition. While existing scholarship has actively explored the lives of younger and older women, the issue of how late middle-aged women respond to structural gender oppression and reclaim their self-worth remains underexplored. The film captures the protagonist’s journey of departure and resistance, offering a compelling narrative of self-redefinition within the patriarchal family order in East Asian cultural contexts. Using Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition as the analytical framework, this paper explores the protagonist Li Hong’s process of subject formation through three dimensions of recognition: emotional, legal, and social. Applying textual and character analysis, the study traces her progression from familial neglect and emotional suppression, to resisting moral expectations, and ultimately securing recognition through social interactions. The findings reveal that Li Hong’s subjectivity is not given by default but gradually shaped through repeated experiences of invisibility and denial. Her decision to ‘leave’ is not merely a spatial move, but a radical departure from the normative gender order, and a form of struggle for recognition across emotional, legal, and social dimensions. This study aims to offer new theoretical insights into the dynamics of recognition and subjectivity reconstruction for women in East Asian sociocultural settings.
