Abstract

This study delves into Moon Shin's artworks, meticulously dissecting his creations into two distinct categories: the arborescent type and the rhizome type, predicated upon their inherent characteristics. Moon Shin’s architectural compositions often manifest a vertical central axis, establishing a spatial hierarchy that concurrently serves as both a visual guide and a pathway for movement. Unlike conventional arborescent structures, Moon Shin’s works deviate by incorporating elements that pulsate with autonomous rhythms, echoing the organic complexity of rhizomatic structures found in nature. While traditional arborescent systems necessitate a holistic framework for parts to retain significance, Moon Shin's creations demonstrate a rhizome-like propensity to proliferate without rigid hierarchies, evoking the post-structuralist notion of a rhizome, which underscores the interconnectivity among components rather than a centralized dominance. Moon Shin’s sculptures embody a synthesis of arborescent and rhizomatic typologies, where asymmetry is not deemed inferior but rather celebrated as a natural consequence of growth, echoing the ethos of post-structuralist philosophy. The interplay between these two typologies within Moon Shin’s repertoire engenders a symbiotic rather than oppositional relationship, revealing a dynamic tension between control and autonomous creation, condensation, and expansion. This tension mirrors the intricate systems observed in nature, reflecting a condensed yet expansive formative process aesthetically manifested in Moon Shin’s sculptures. Ultimately, Moon Shin’s oeuvre resonates with the aesthetics of modern digital art rooted in the rhizomatic system, encapsulating a distinctive and innovative artistic vision.
