Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to read the variously changing style of Frank Stella’s 1958∼2000s through the philosopher Jill Deleuze’s ‘rhizomes’ point of view. As the intersection 1970, units of shape(is named: marquettes) are separated from the painting surface and are individually developed. To create the arrangement of straight line marquettes from the architectures and curve-lineal marquettes from protractors or wave rulers, the sculptures begin from 2 dimension relief style and proceed ahead to 3 dimension sculpture. Being separated from 2 dimension, marquettes add 10∼15∘degrees more and more every two years continually. After 1980, having certain volume, the marquettes become the complex image of protractors, various curve, rhythmical flow and harmonize with elegant colorful decoration and the special materiality from metal surface. Early 1990s, finally the Stella’s sculpture become the arrangement of 3 dimension marquettes. The Moby Dick series, already finished style has been reused years after and the composition rule which proceed into complicate direction is adapted for both sculpture and painting commonly. Now, the 3 dimension marquettes become the environmental sculptures with having double-sided characters, one is look as if the accumulation of irregular chaotic lump of scrap metal to show civilization critic visual language and the other is the sculpture of elegance rhythmical dynamism to reveal the character of admiring civilization: and arguably is seen as if come(proceed) and go(rear) in between the boundaries of beauty and ugly. In case of 2 dimensional painting/printing expression, since 1970 to 2000s, proceed into very complicate composition, to use dozens and hundred of marquette composition with coloring techniques, Stella has made large murals. From the philosopher Jill Deleuze’s rhizomes point of view, it is understood as un-fixed and multiplicity, specific pattern’s unlimited proliferating, and free combination of arrangement as the plasticity of proceed and rear.
