Abstract

This study examines differences of food risk anxiety level and alternative food propensity in Korea and Japan comparatively. We assume that risk perceptions respond not only to food risk objectively but also to be constructed with social and historical factors. Accordingly, we have investigated these historical and social experiences in Korea and Japan before doing empirical analysis. The major empirical findings are as follows : First, in food risk anxiety, Japan consumers reveal high levels of anxiety in all food related risks than Korean consumers do, and in the dimension analysis to detect food risk anxiety dimension, Korea has more dimensions with long distances among food risk anxieties compared with Japan, which shows more close distance among food risk anxieties than Korea. This means, while Korean consumer feel food anxieties from specific cognitions and knowledges individually, Japan consumer feel food anxieties more similar although they have different causes. These dissimilarities between Korea and Japan can be explained with the difference of historical food risk experiences in the past. Second, in propensity to consume alternative food, Korean consumers show high level of knowledge about alternative food system and their intention to consume organic food is not low, but there exists more gaps between intention and be havior in organic food consumption than which has been found among Japan consumer. Therefore, in Korea, the proportion of consumer with so called 'consciousness without consumption' is relatively larger than that of Japan. Third, in comparison of the social differentiation of food risk anxiety and consumption of alternative food in Korea and Japan, we found that in Korea, educational levels affect food risk anxiety significantly and income level affects alternative food consumption levels strongly. These findings contrasted with that of Japan which shows no significant social economic factors except age in food anxiety and alternative food consumption.
