Abstract

This study examines the differentiation of food risk anxiety levels and food consumption behaviors according to social strata and demographic characteristics of Korean consumers. We have analyzed how three realms of food anxiety, food concern, and food consumption behaviors are socially differentiated. This is followed by an analysis of how these three realms are related with one another. The major findings are as follows:First, food anxiety increases with education level. It is especially high in group with college or higher education. We also have found that the housewives' food anxiety level is high in regard to technology-caused food hazards. Second, food concern is positively related with the position in social stratification. Compared to lower class, the middle class in terms of income and education has shown higher food concern. In addition, it is found that the upper class as a composite of income and education has much higher level of food concern. Third, reflexive food consumption behavior is strong in two groups, i.e. the group with more than college education and the group of housewives. Fourth, food anxiety affects food concern directly, while food anxiety affects reflexive food consumption behavior indirectly via food concern. Fifth, we have attempted to develop a typology, which takes both food risk related perception and food consumption behavior into consideration. 'Food apathy type' (very low anxiety, low food concern, and medium in reflexive food consumption), which is widely found in lower class, demonstrates that food consumption behavior is likely to be internalized within actors as cultural characteristics in everyday life.
