Abstract

This study analyzes the issues of language, education, and space experienced by Koreans in Japan in post-liberation Japanese society, focusing on the 1955 documentary film Children of Korea. It clarifies the meaning of the autonomous practices formed within this context. Produced collaboratively by the Korean Educators' Alliance and the Association of Korean Filmmakers in Japan amidst institutional exclusion such as the closure of Korean schools and the implementation of the Alien Registration Act, the film serves as a record and visual archive of practices seeking community survival through language and education in the face of oppression. This study first compares the narrative of Kang Min-ja's 1953 manuscript, “Where is the Motherland?—An Essay by the Korean Students' Association in Japan,” which served as the film's source material, with that of “Children of Korea.” It reveals how the individual experiences of shame and self-awareness undergo visual reconstruction to transform into a social narrative. It then analyzes the excluded urban space of Edagawa-cho in Tokyo's Koto Ward, demonstrating how the residences of Koreans in Japan and Korean schools functioned as ethnic enclaves where language, education, and community intersected. Furthermore, focusing on Kaneda Toshiko's ‘double shame’ depicted in classroom scenes, it interprets the process by which inner wounds and self-loathing are transformed into communal recognition through the interaction of utterance and reception within the institutional space of the classroom. Based on this analysis, the film's depiction of the characters' linguistic, behavioral, and spatial practices is interpreted through the concept of positionality, specifically the positionality of Koreans in Japan. This presents “Children of Korea” as a case study exploring the existence and potential practices of Koreans in Japan within the discourses of language, education, and ethnicity in postwar Japanese society. It proposes a critical perspective that reexamines the experiences of Koreans in Japan through the lens of positionality and the problem of speech.
