Abstract

This paper examines the get-rich-quick mentality prevalent in modern society by analyzing Jang Ryujin’s novel, To The Moon, and considers the resulting changes in the meaning of labor. The cryptocurrency craze that swept South Korea in 2017 and 2021 serves as a significant indicator of contemporary perceptions of capital. While the dream of becoming rich overnight is widely held, many now pursue it not through labor but through investment, speculation, or games of chance. As the desire for unearned income intensifies, the value of labor inevitably diminishes. This study, therefore, analyzes To The Moon—a novel about office workers investing in cryptocurrency—to explore how the meaning of labor has been transformed. In To The Moon, the get-rich-quick mentality is depicted as a means to overcome class conflict and achieve upward social mobility. The protagonists, a group of three female workers who call themselves ‘B03’, resolve to invest in cryptocurrency for upward mobility after turning away from the value of labor, faced with corporate absurdities, discrimination, and harassment where their hard work is not properly rewarded. Capital, after all, is a primary determinant of social class. However, To The Moon does not blindly deny the value of labor. Rather, paradoxically, it also shows that achieving sudden wealth can be the basis for restoring the value of labor. This is evidenced by the fact that the main character, Da-hae Jeong, did not quit the company even though she earned 320 million won in virtual currency, but rather improved her life at the company and felt compassion for the team leader Ko Dae-young, who harassed her. Previously, labor was a struggle for survival without promise, but when 320 million won was earned, labor changed into a means of accumulating capital and a method of self-realization. This shows that the foundation of life can change the meaning of labor. It is true that in modern society, which has come to worship capital, the value of labor has faded. Yet To The Moon, a novel centered on cryptocurrency—known as the epitome of investment and speculation—paradoxically reveals a reality where capital itself has become the prerequisite for reclaiming the meaning of labor. The accumulation of assets through investment and speculation can provide workers with a stable foundation. Furthermore, a stable foundation enables us to perceive the concealed significance of labor. The get-rich-quick mentality in modern society is not an escape from labor, but rather a survival instinct rooted in the psychology of workers striving to establish the bare minimum foundation for contemplating the meaning of labor in a modern society where survival itself is difficult, and to reclaim control over their lives.
