Abstract

This article investigates Moon Soon-tae’s novel The Human Wall(1984) to explore its literary representation of the forced mobilization of Koreans as laborers under Japanese colonial rule. In light of the scarcity of literary works that comprehensively address the issue of Korean forced labor, this work holds significant literary value. Nevertheless, it has remained relatively neglected in existing research. Centering on its characters, The Human Wall provides a vivid and concrete depiction of both the nature of forced mobilization and the tragic lives of those who were conscripted, while further illuminating the latent possibilities of resistance and solidarity. The narrative follows the protagonist Cho Man-bok and other characters of diverse ages and social backgrounds, who are mobilized as laborers under the deception or coercion of the Japanese Empire, thereby revealing the widespread nature of forced mobilization across Korean society. Moreover, the novel portrays the confinement of Korean laborers during transportation and their life in Japan upon arrival, which is marked by grueling labor, frequent accidents and strict surveillance, including bans on the use of the Korean language and the imposition of Japanese imperial education aimed at subjugation. Deprived of wages and even adequate food, these workers are subjected to severe economic exploitation as well as brutal physical violence. At the same time, through the character of Cheon Deok-bo, the novel emphasizes that the Korean laborers, though enduring dehumanizing treatment, maintain their agency and identity. Their persistent struggles and attempts at collective escape gradually form a process of solidarity that implies a broader narrative extending to the level of active opposition against colonial domination. Therefore, reconsidering The Human Wall is of particular academic value for interpreting both the historical reality and the literary articulation of Korean forced laborers.
