Abstract
Georg Forster was one of intellectuals in the late 18th century who sought to view the people and culture of the non-European world favorably. He was a radical liberal intellectual. He also experienced the non-European world when he was young on an expedition to the South Pacific. This encounter with the non-European world shaped his rejection of the racial hierarchies prevalent among European intellectuals of his time. He saw the non-European world and humans as equal to Europeans and further tried to understand their culture as it is. In this way, he was an open-minded person. However, he did not consider Europe and the non-European world to be in equivalent conditions, This perception developed into his belief in different stages of civilizational progress. While he acknowledged the relatively underdeveloped state of non-European societies, he did not view them as incapable of transformation. Therefore, he wanted to examine the role of Western civilization for the change of non-Western society. Today, such views have been increasingly criticized as Eurocentric. Of course, Forster exhibited a clear critical awareness of colonialism and imperialism. However, it is clear that he presupposed a hierarchical relationship between Europe and the non-European world, evaluating the latter from a Eurocentric perspective. In addition, his perception led to a logic that justified the intervention of advanced European cultures in non-Europe in the name of progress and development. Today, we are facing an era where respect for the diversity of human beings and cultures is required. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an attitude that can overcome Western-centered universalism and recognize cultural differences.
