Abstract

It is said that love is not an object of inquiry in philosophy, but philosophy began with the inquiry of love. In Plato's first work on friendship, Lysis, Socrates asked why he loved friends, but did not clearly distinguish between Philia and Eros and desires, but only mentioned the love of parents, erotic love, and love and things between friends. On the other hand, Aristotle systematically organizes everything about friendship in Nicomachean Ethics and defines it as the best virtue. Friendship is divided into friendships for pleasure, for utility, and for virtue, depending on what they give and receive. Friendship is the most necessary thing in life, the most important thing for opportunities for good deeds, and the core of friendship is self-love. Aristotle's friendship is not about any madness or divine passion or emotion that comes from outside, like Eros, but about human virtue, and is obtained through constant activities of virtue. Aristotle's characteristics of friendship include relationships between father and son, husband and wife, brothers and friends, as well as with citizens within a community, starting with self-love and choosing what is noble, and striving to do the most noble things. When we are born, we do not stay in a given family relationship, but practice virtue through friendship and pursue complete love, and finally achieve happiness, which means a flourishing life.
